‘Round Midnight’, Best of 2020
Tempo di bilanci di fine anno, per un’annata funesta come poche altre per quanto riguarda la musica, caratterizzata dalla quasi totale assenza di musica dal vivo.
L’assenza cioè del contatto con il pubblico, lo scambio in tempo reale di vibrazioni ed emozioni, l’essenza e la vita stessa di quest’arte.
Ma discograficamente l’annata non è andata così male, anzi. Un sacco di ottimi album sono usciti nel corso dell’anno, come avete potuto ascoltare nel corso delle nostre trasmissioni di Round Midnight qua a Controradio. Qui di seguito gli elenchi dei preferiti di Round Midnight del 2020 per quanto riguarda il jazz internazionale ed il jazz italiano. Con un’appendice finale a segnalare una serie di perle inedite, registrazioni d’epoca mai ascoltate, ripescate da polverosi archivi sonori, con protagonisti del calibro di Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey e Dave Brubeck. Succose testimonianze, dal vivo ed in studio di incisione, di alcuni giganti del jazz colti al culmine della loro parabola artistica.

Un ex aequo generalizzato che serve solo a segnalarvi quelle che per Round Midnight sono state le migliori uscite discografiche dell’anno appena trascorso.
INTERNATIONAL WAVE
Per le migliori uscite internazionali si parte dalla California, con un quintetto, A Love Supreme Electric, che assembla musicisti anche di provenienze musicali piuttosto diverse (dai rock dei Minutemen e degli Stooges di Mike Watt all’improvvisazione radicale di Vinny Golia ed Henry Kaiser), impegnati sul terreno comune rappresentato dalla musica di John Coltrane. Vengono riprese per intero le scalette di due album cardine del suo ultimo periodo: il celebre A Love Supreme, naturalmente, ma anche un altro lavoro quasi altrettanto importante, anche questo a forma di suite, inciso a meno di un anno di distanza: Meditations. Poi due dei migliori trombettisti del nuovo jazz: Ambrose Akinmusire, sempre più uno dei nomi più interessanti del jazz contemporaneo; e Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, pescato in un infuocato live al Blue Note di New York, solo pochi gioni prima che scattasse il lockdown in città. Tra i vari dischi che vedono protagonisti il sassofonista James Brandon Lewis e il batterista Chad Taylor abbiamo scelto l’esordio di Molecular, questo nuovo quartetto che li vede insieme al cubano Aruan Ortiz e al roccioso basso di Brad Jones. Poi due uscite dell’etichetta di Chicago International Anthem, che si afferma sempre più come una delle più interessanti Indie del panorama internazionale: ecco allora la cantante e clarinettista Angel Bat Dawid, ripresa dal vivo al Festival di Berlino dello scorso anno in una performance molto emozionante, che odora quasi di trance; e l’ultimo lavoro del trombettista Rob Mazuek, impegnato insieme ai 12 musicisti da lui raccolti nel progetto della Exploding Star Orchestra ad innalzare un canto che sa di spazi dilatati, di ricerca dell’ignoto e, soprattutto, di libertà. A proposito di orchestre, impossibile non menzionare tra le migliori uscite del 2020 la più premiata e famosa big band del jazz contemporaneo, quella della compositrice ed arrangiatrice Maria Schneider, impegnata a riflettere tra il vecchio mondo e la nuova realtà digitale, con i suoi rischi di controllo delle nostre identità (Data Lords). Ed ancora un bellissimo solo di uno dei maggiori poeti del pianoforte contemporaneo, Fred Hersch, poi l’Africa dell’esordiente sudafricano Asher Gamedze, batterista che sembra soprattutto avere le idee ben chiare nel creare una musica in bilico tra l’improvvisazione, spoken word e canto tribale. E per finire Mary Halvorson, impegnatissima protagonista (o co-protagonista) di diverse uscite discografiche in questo 2020. Il suo Artlessy Falling, struggente secondo capitolo di Code Girl, il suo progetto sulla forma “canzone”, è arricchito dalla preziosa (e sempre più rara) presenza della voce di Robert Wyatt. E potremmo proporla per un encomio speciale anche solo per questo. Come bonus track, l’ultimo album di Gil Scott Heron, I’m New Here, con l’accompagnamento e la veste sonora completamente re-inventata dalla fantasia e la creatività di Makaya McCraven con risultati sorprendenti.

GOLDEN ARCHIVE WAVES
Cinque (+ 1) straordinari album di registrazioni inedite suggeriti da Round Midnight, regali inaspettati dal passato che vedono alcuni giganti del jazz in azione al culmine della loro creatività. Il decennio è quello cruciale, tra la fine degli anni 50 e quella degli anni 60. Due sono in studio di incisione: l’album fantasma di Art Blakey alla testa di una delle migliori formazioni di sempre dei Jazz Messengers, rimasto negli scaffali dell’etichetta perché il produttore e proprietario della Blue Note preferì far uscire al suo posto un live al Birdland registrato pochi mesi dopo. E poi le sorprese degli alternate takes, con l’aggiunta di un paio di inediti, provenienti dalla seduta di registrazione di uno degli album più famosi (e più venduti, in tutto il mondo) della storia del jazz: “Time Out” del quartetto di Dave Brubeck con Paul Desmond. Quello in cui facevano capolino le prime versioni diegli hit Take Five e di Blue Rondo á la Turk. Poi il travolgente sax tenore di Sonny Rollins, pescato in Olanda insieme ad Han Bennik e il trio di Bill Evans con Eddie Gomez e Jack DeJohnette dal vivo nel 68 al Ronnie Scott di Londra. I due concerti dei gruppi di Charles Mingus a Brema erano già usciti in precedenza, ma solo su bootleg e in forma incompleta: la nuova strenna da 4 cd della Sunnyside è ora ufficiale, integrale e si avvale di un lavoro di masterizzazione impeccabile.
